Staying Power

By Jeremy Kern

This month I gigged with a newly formed Groovesmith, a funk/jazz band down in Longbeach. They’re nice guys and play good music. We play at Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles in LB on Sundays. Last night I played my first SoFarSounds. It was outside a nice clothing store in SilverLake and was with this dope singer songwriter Michelle. The event was cool and we played well for our short set. Hopefully we’ll get to do more of those. Also the guitarist was the guitarist in the “This is America” video so that was definitely cool. He said he might get me on Instrumental Casting, here’s hoping!

When I first moved up here my first set of roommates (Autumn, Sharon) told me about staying power. They told me that this town is about not giving up and staying steady on the grind. I have been sober for a bit now for some perspective and I realize the truth to their sentiment. Wanting to be farther along with your career constantly is a drain and it requires strong belief in your personal strength to continue on the path. I know I love playing music so I will keep playing. My Aunt Delia says that writing goals down helps greatly towards achieving them, so here it goes. By this time next year I want to be able to say that I am glad I moved to LA.
